Updates on Roundup Litigation: What’s New in 2024

Thousands of Roundup lawsuits have been filed against Bayer and Monsanto, the manufacturers of Roundup weedkiller. The lawsuits allege that exposure to glyphosate, the primary ingredient in Roundup, has caused them to develop non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and other adverse health conditions. Our Roundup cancer lawyers discuss the recent updates on Roundup litigation in this blog.

What Is the Current Status of Roundup Litigation in January 2024?

To date, over 100,000 Roundup lawsuits have been filed nationwide. Most of those cases have been tried or settled. As of January 2024, approximately 4,177 Roundup lawsuits were pending in the California multidistrict litigation. However, tens of thousands of Roundup lawsuits are pending in states around the country. Our Roundup lawyers continue to take Roundup cases for potential lawsuits or settlements.

The first Roundup lawsuit resulted in a California jury awarding the plaintiff (injured party) $289 million in damages. A recent Roundup trial in December 2023 resulted in a $3.5 million award to the plaintiff.

Bayer agreed to pay $6.9 million in June 2023 to the state of New York. The payment was to settle claims that the company had misled consumers about the environmental safety of Roundup weedkiller. Bayer also reached a settlement for about $11 billion that resolved about 80% of the Roundup lawsuits.

Most of the Roundup cases tried in 2023 were decided for the plaintiffs. Only three cases were decided in favor of Bayer. More Roundup lawsuits are scheduled for trial in several states in early 2024.

Why Are People Filing Lawsuits for Roundup Exposure?

Roundup lawsuits claim that exposure to Roundup herbicide caused the plaintiffs to develop non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and other related cancers. Numerous studies and extensive research have concluded that glyphosate can increase the risk of developing non-Hodkin’s lymphoma and other cancers.

The plaintiffs claim Bayer/Monsanto failed to warn consumers about the increased cancer risks when exposed to glyphosate. The lawsuits also claim that the company is guilty of deception regarding the safety of glyphosate and Roundup by covering up the link between Roundup and cancer.

However, Bayer continues to allege that Roundup is safe to use and does not cause cancer. It actively disputes the claims in the lawsuits and defends the allegations in court.

Signs of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma can include, but are not limited to:

  • Fever
  • Swollen lymph nodes in armpits, neck, or groin
  • Persistent fatigue
  • Night sweats
  • Abdominal swelling or pain
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Coughing, chest pain, or trouble breathing

See a doctor immediately if you have been exposed to Roundup and experience any adverse symptoms. You should also seek legal advice if you are diagnosed with cancer after Roundup exposure.
